Solafune Selected For SBIR Promotion Program

Solafune has been selected by NEDO for the SBIR Promotion Program in tandem with the Ministry of Environment

Based on the needs of the Ministry of the Environment, we will work to address research and development challenges. - Ren Uechi, CEO

Solafune, Inc. (CEO: Ren Uechi) has been selected for the 2024 fiscal year call for proposals under the 'SBIR Promotion Program' (Linked Type) by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), with the Ministry of the Environment as the source of research and development needs.

  • Project Description

Forest monitoring using high-resolution satellite data with super-resolution models.

  • Project Overview

Forest monitoring and management are currently often conducted manually, but as we face an era of labor shortages, there is a growing need to improve the efficiency of environmental monitoring. While satellite data-based forest monitoring is advancing in fields such as carbon credits, challenges remain, such as the lack of resolution and the unique characteristics of satellite data, which make it difficult to apply for forest monitoring.

To address these challenges, this project will enhance resolution using super-resolution models and develop AI models specifically tailored for satellite data. Furthermore, to promote the commercialization of this subsidized project, we will conduct needs assessments through exchanges with foreign governments and companies, aiming to create a business that can be deployed globally. In this project, we will not only conduct technological validation and development to achieve high-precision monitoring using satellite data, but also conduct field surveys and commercialization evaluations to ensure the viability of the business.

Technologies we plan to verify and develop include:

    • Techniques for individually identifying each tree using high-resolution satellite imagery, enabling a more accurate understanding of forest conditions.

    • Techniques for distinguishing tree species, allowing for the evaluation of their impact on the environment being analyzed.

  • About the NEDO “SBIR Promotion Program”

The SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Promotion Program aims to promote research and development by startups focused on research and development that contribute to solving diverse social issues. This program is based on guidelines for revitalizing the creation of science, technology, and innovation. It also aims to facilitate the smooth implementation of these outcomes into society.
