Solafune Demonstrates Garbage Detection Technology Using AI and Satellite Data with Okayama City

Solafune Inc. is working on a project that uses AI technology to detect garbage hotspots in rivers, irrigation, and drainage channels in Okayama City.

Solafune Inc. is working on a project that uses AI technology to detect garbage hotspots in rivers, irrigation, and drainage channels in Okayama City. This will be achieved by analyzing a combination of satellite images and aerial photos in cooperation with the City of Okayama. We are pleased to announce that we will be presenting the project outline and conducting a field survey publicly.

Background and objectives

The city has more than 4,000 kilometers of irrigation drainage canals that extend into residential areas. However, these canals are also a significant source of river pollution since they often allow garbage to flow into the river or be disposed of in it. Based on field surveys, there are at least 200 "hotspots" in the city's rivers and bodies of water where trash accumulates.

Direct field surveys were previously the only way to identify hotspots. However, Solafune has developed technology that uses AI image analysis to detect hotspots from satellite images and aerial photos. This technology will be able to demonstrate its accuracy and reliability.

Date and details of implementation

  1. Project Briefing Session (to be held during SDGs Exchange Meeting for Citizens)

    • Date and time: Sunday, January 29, 2023, 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

    • Location: Sasagase River watershed (Hirata, Kita-ku, Tokyo)

    • Description: A field survey will be conducted to verify AI image analysis hot spot accuracy.
